You may have noticed the two articles by Glenn Chaple in Astronomy,
one in the May issue and the other in this month's, June. He
discusses upgrading the small, cheap Wal-Mart type scopes. One
suggestion was a red dot sight sold for BB (pellet) guns. I was in
Wal-Mart this morning and bought one. It is really very good and only
$8:00. There is no reticule so no good for star hoping, but otherwise
as good as, or slightly better in sharpness, as the Orion $35 one. It
does not have dimming and judging from its daylight performance, it
may be too bright. We'll see.
As I reported earlier, I fixed up the 60mm of my father's by
putting on a .9 to 1.25 right angle and tightened the tripod. With a
10 mm and a 25 mm it is a reasonable scope. I mounted the Orion red
dot I had on it, but will now replace it with this Daisy.
Richard, this may be the answer to helping people who have
purchased those types of scopes and could never use them because of
the tiny finder scopes. It requires a 3/8 in dovetail mount, but a
little carved piece of clothes pin and a couple small metal screws
should solve that problem. Air rifle sight mounts are probably
readily available, also.
