[Astronomy] field of view

By the time I got back out there some low clouds had moved in.  I did 
get a couple of runs in though using Saturn and then Regulus when it 
cleared up.  These are not on the equator but close and gave 30' or 
1/2 degree (2min transit time).  I didn't identify all, but certainly 
had M59 and 60 and M84 and 86.  But according to pg 133, Messier Guide 
no 3 would fit in a 1/2 deg eyepiece.  What am I doing wrong?   jlrc 
PS scope is 1200mm Orion 10" dob.
