[Astronomy] daisy red dot

This page shows how to make a crude (but effective) finder, but with the
crazy low price of the Daisy, I would rather modify it than start from
scratch. The bottom of this page shows that putting a Potentiometer between
one lead of the LED and the switch would allow one to have "dimmer" control.
Can one still buy components like that at Radio Shack?

I have a Telrad, but I'd like to make a simple scope for my cousin's kids
and having a cheap "telrad" on it is a neat idea!
