Plan to attend some of the exciting opportunities to hear nationally
recognized authority on Service-Learning. All sessions are free and
open.
Barbara Holland, PhD.
Director of the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse
Dr. Holland of Portland Oregon, Director of the National
Service-Learning Clearinghouse web site, author, speaker, and workshop
leader in service-learning will be on campus April 10th. She also holds
appointments as a Senior Scholar in the Center for Service and Learning
at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI), and as
Adjunct Professor at University of Western Sydney and Australian
Catholic University.
It is exciting to be able to host Dr. Holland on our campus. She brings
expertise and insights on service-learning issues which hopefully will
interest many of you. Several appearances are scheduled. Please
consider taking advantage of any of the following opportunities to meet
and dialogue with her. Service-learning, is growing in momentum
throughout the United States at all levels of education. Dr. Holland
appears at national and international conferences as a key-note speaker,
workshop leader and advocate for service-learning and its potential for
building citizens in our democratic society.
The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse (NSLC) website supports
service-learning efforts of schools, higher education institutions,
communities, and tribal nations. The site provides information and
thousands of free on-line resources, the nation's largest library of
service-learning materials, national service-learning listserves, and
reference and technical assistance services. The Clearinghouse site
defines service-learning as "a teaching and learning strategy that
integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection
to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and
strengthen communities."

enhancement of student's knowledge and
understanding when curriculum is integrated with real
life experiences, which meet
identified community needs. Students, community and
institutions all benefit when
youth become civically engaged.

community service providers, or any individuals interested in learning
more about service-learning, its benefits to student's learning, effects
on behaviors, and development of positive relationships for schools,
institutions and communities.
