Please note that your registration fee will be paid by the PreK-16 grant for the first 200
people. This work is important so that we are aligned all the way through in order for
students not to slip through the cracks because we did not know they needed to learn
something for their next educational level.

If your district is a member of the ESU 10 Title II-A Consortium, we will reimburse your school for
the cost of your sub when you or the school office turns in the paperwork.
I hope that your school might allow you to use a district vehicle if one is available.

Please request a sub reimbursement form from me if you are going to attend.

Elaine

We cordially invite you to attend the Fifth Annual P-16 Statewide Conference, "Preparing Students to Succeed in College or Career"
on January 27, 2004, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at The Comhusker Hotel, 333 South 13th Street in Lincoln. We encourage you to
participate in this premier educational experience. This year we are honored to have several nationally known speakers for the
conference:

Stephen R. Portch, Chancellor Emeritus at the University System of Georgia is nationally recognized for his leadership in
the development of Georgia's comprehensive P-16 Initiative. He is a widely published author and frequent national speaker,
and has been named by Change magazine as one of the 21 most influential educators in the nation.

Cheryl Orr is the Indiana Commission for Higher Education's liaison to the Indiana Education Roundtable. The Roundtable
developed Indiana's P-16 Plan for Improving Student Achievement. She played a key role in winning support of the business
and education communities for adoption of a "core 40" high school curriculum designed to give students a foundation for
success in college and the workforce.

Jane V. Wellman is a Senior Associate at The Institute for Higher Education Policy in Washington, D.C. She is among the
most knowledgeable observers of developments leading up to the federal Higher Education Act reauthorization, scheduled
for the next session of congress.

Felice Nudelman is the project co-director of the American Democracy Project, an initiative that seeks to create an
intellectual and experiential understanding of the civic engagement for college undergraduates. The project is a joint effort of
the New York Times and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

This conference will also feature an array of concurrent sessions highlighting Nebraska and national P-16 projects. The Regional
Councils will also meet to discuss plans for 2004. Enclosed you will find a draft agenda for the day.

The registration fee for this conference is $35, which will cover breaks and the luncheon. Please make checks payable to the
Nebraska Community College Association. The registration fee is refundable if requested by January 16, 2004. If you need overnight
lodging, please contact The Comhusker Hotel by January 9, 2004 at (800) 793-7474 directly and identify yourself as a P-16
Conference participant. Unfortunately, funds are not available to provide lodging, travel expenses, and registration costs except for
preK-12 teachers and counselors. Their travel and registration expenses, plus reimbursement to the school for substitute teachers, will
be covered by the Nebraska Partnership for Quality Teacher Education Project. Expense reimbursement forms and substitute teacher
reimbursement forms will be available to these individuals the day of the conference. Please return the enclosed registration form and
fee by January 9, 2004. We hope that you will plan to participate in this conference and look forward to your involvement in this
annual P-16 activity.
