I thought I understood from the meeting in Kearney last April that if  
a student never shows up for the year, the exit date should be the  
last day they were actually in attendance the previous spring so that  
they won't show up in reports at all.

I think this is probably a question that needs to be sent to the NDE  
help desk, so I'll do that and then report what I've learned.
